"John Barclay embraced the idea of bringing in non-Brockport mercenaries. In the early years (1976-1980) of recruiting a "college" side for Saranac Lake, selections were made by invitation only to an elite 12 to 15 Doggies'. We then relied on supplanting our numbers by sniffing around the bars on Main St. to find those whom were willing and worthy to be "Blooded as Doggies'".
His dream was of a Doggies' Dynasty.
Wherein lies the heart of a true Doggie? By sweating and pissing on the Rugby pitch valiantly together or merely having played on the B or C Side and gotten drunk at the parties while at Brockport?
Nor did John ever play for, let alone establish BRASS. When asked about playing for an alumni side, he would reply, "I am not ready to be put out to pasture." John had left Brockport by the time BRASS had been coined by Jerry Doody in 1982. Fortunately, Jerry's idea of the horse looking Great Dane never caught on. The use of the term BRASS was actually dropped after the 1991 campaign in favor of the more recognizable and identifiable Brockport.
John Mercier had established the Brockport Old Boys some years earlier, around 1975. In 1977,1978,1980,and 1982 there were two separate and distinct Brockport teams at the Saranac Lake Tournament; BOB {regulars every year} and the Doggies' {banned from the tournament in 1979}. Up until 1985 many alumni did not identify with the Doggies" name. It was at Saranac Lake in 1985 that about 60 Doggies' and alumni showed up and we only had one side entered. All DUES paying Doggies' and alumni had a meeting and the question put forth was, "are we here to win or to placate a few fat old men who can barely play a half." Overwhelmingly, it was decided by young dogs and alumni alike that we wanted to win! And lo, all became Doggies' on that day. True, several went home with their tails between their legs never to be seen again, but all were embraced as Doggies'. The Doggies' went on to win the first of several Club championships. And we continued to supplant our numbers with those whom may not have been purebred Brockport Doggie's , but none the less were blooded on the pitches with us.
Therein lies the heart of a true Doggie!
So, with no disrespect intended towards anyone, leave the whining to your wives
and children and come to Saranac Lake fit and ready to play.
