BROCKPORT DOGGIES RFC Est. 1970
CLUB HISTORY
Looking back...
In 1970, Brockport College was the typical campus Petri dish filled with an assortment of devious and unsavory characters. Crafted deep inside the guts of western NY, out of idealism and competitiveness, amid the hippies, soldiers, misfits and other local or imported citizens, rose a band of superior athletes and the Doggies Rugby club was spawned. Upon the practice fields and in the now torn down BVI (Brockport Village Inn), John Barclay commanded his army of mercenaries who would dominate upstate NY and continue to set the standard for smash mouth rugby for many years after his death.
The Brockport Doggies played an integral role in the formation and development of the New York State Rugby Conference. "In 1970, a few fledgling clubs in upstate New York met on the campus of Brockport State College to form what became the Upstate Rugby Union....................... Looking back the Doggies have a rich history marked with numerous championships and victories earned throughout decades of college sides and on into an alumni tournament nucleus that remains victorious today. One highlight was when the team went back to Saranac in 1991 and won the Club Division for the third straight year...the B Side were champs of their division as well! This triumph placed the Brockport Doggies on the front cover of Rugby Magazine in August 1991 as shown below.

RUGBY MAGAZINE Saranac Lake, NY August 3-4, 1991 Club Division While the 32-team Club Division was more competitive from top to bottom, one thing stayed the same: the Brockport Rugby Alumni Select Side (BRASS), graduates from Brockport State College in Western New York, won for the third year in a row. BRASS beat Boulder (CO) RFC 23-19 in a tightly-contested final. Brockport #8 Joe Coticchio was the Division's MVP. |

RUGBY MAGAZINE (cont) Brockport State Alumni The team that best exemplifies the rugby nature of Saranac Lake is the Brockport Rugby Alumni Select Side (BRASS)... ...the doggies brought three sides (Club, B and Over-35 Divisions), about 75 players and a total party of 120 for this year's Saranac get-together. With their fluorescent T-shirts, huge Brockport Doggies sign, two division championships (Club and B) and a crowd of shouting/barking supporters at all matches, Brockport clearly made their mark at Saranac. |

It's now 2004, some are married, some are not, some are in between, while fresh crops of stud-dogs supplant the team's ranks from college. Regardless of whether we're doing it Doggie Style or Family Style, we're Back-in-Black at Saranac, year in and year out. To see what it's all about check us out on the fields, in the pubs, or at the lake.
