Saranac 2002!!!
Fellow Doggies:
Well, it's Saranac time again. By the time that you receive this, we will
be about 3 days away from the annual event. Over the past couple of years,
we have had continued success, however, that first place trophy continues to
elude us. If you are on the bubble about going, don't be. Even if
you
cannot play, we want to see you and we want this to be a very successful
weekend both on and off the field. I know that a lot of folks have trained
very hard this year and it will show starting on Saturday morning. Here is
a little info about the weekend (like you need a reminder)
Saranac 2001
Last year was another very successful year with a lot of quality moments.
Bill Barclay and his boys were there as guests of the team to see what being
a Doggie is truly all about and exactly what John meant to the team. This
idea and follow through was the brain child of Scotty Lance who has stayed
in contact with the Barclay family. Thanks Scotty for a great idea, in
talking with Bill, I know that it meant a lot to them.
Greg Perry and Gomer Morgan made surprise visits and it was another great
event. However, none of our three teams took the big prize in their
respective divisions even though all three performed admirably. In total,
we were a combined 6 wins and three losses, we were dominant in victory and
lost two of the three matches by a combined 3 and 4 points respectively.
We
also outscored our opponents by a 172 - 81 margin or a 2:1 ratio. If you
take out the lopsided loss that the B side endured at the hands of a
Schenectady (loaded with 5 Ombac players) we gave up 50 points in 10
games!!!!
Club Side
The club side was outstanding again this year! They easily moved through
Saturday, but, they came up just short in a tough battle with one of
our
old foes, White Plains 23 - 20 on Sunday. A difficult ending to a
great
weekend. The dreaded Knicks beat White Plains 10 - 3 to win the Club
Division.
Club Results:
Doggies' 44 Binghamton 0
Doggies' 17 Worcester 4
Doggies' 20 Flowers/Scotland 6
White Plains 23 Doggies' 20
Totals:
Doggies' 101 Opponents 30
Over 40's Side
The Over 40's team started strong out of the box and easily captured their
Saturday games by a combined score of 60 - 8. Great open field play, and
rock solid defense was the name of the game for this veteran side.
Sunday's match against Wilmington was a very physical game that was
virtually even throughout. However, the Dogs just couldn't manage a break
to get on top. It was close throughout, but a couple of early scores
by
Wilmington held up and they won by a narrow margin.
The Myths and Legends took the over 40 title again and they crushed
Wilmington in the finals 27 - 5 after the Doggies' took everything out of
them.
Over 40 Results:
Doggies' 29 Bing./Oswego 0
Doggies' 31 Clairmount 8
Wilmington 9 Doggies' 5
Totals:
Doggies' 65 Opponents 13
B Side
The B side had a much tougher draw this year and they had their work cut out
for them from the start. Thanks again to Glen and Kentucky for keeping and
supporting the vital link with the college side which resulted in our
greatest influx of youth in recent years. The side played with passion and
intensity. Unfortunately, after gutting out a win in the first round, they
ran into a tough (and loaded) Schenectady Reds team in the second round.
Schenectady went on to win the "B" division championship. Of
note, former
Reds and Doggies' player Dave DiSorbo (now an Eagle) brought 4 or 5 of his
teammates from Ombac with him to augment the Reds' winning side.
B Side Results:
Doggies' 6 Montclair 3
Schenectady 31 Doggies' 0
Totals:
Doggies' 126 Opponents 19
Saranac 2001 was another great event that brought together about 80 Doggie
players and approximately 50 family/supporters. We continue to be the best
represented team at this great tourney.
Doggies' came from every-where. Princer and Rosey were there in support as
usual (also got in their 18's as time permitted), Stony, Pasquale, Rick
Currie, Scott Reinhart and many others were present. Even Joe Brewer made
his triumphant return and it was great to see him. Eddie,
Harold, the
Murph's and a few others formally joined the over 40 side and as you would
expect, Casa del Sol was a site to behold on Sunday evening.
John Barclay Remembered
It was truly an honor to be named the recipient of the John Barclay award
last year at Saranac, especially with John's brother and nephews present.
I
was caught completely off guard and I consider this to be an honor of which
I am very fortunate to have received. Thanks from the bottom of my heart,
it meant a lot too me, to not only be given the award but to also reside
with some pretty lofty partners who were already on the list. Thanks so
much!!!!
Here is a list of those honored:
Barclay Award Winners
1987 - Jim "Stein" Patterson
1988 - Mike Ferrigno
1989 - Mike Lewis
1990 - Tim Brown
1991 - Marcus Barnes
1992 - Danny "Hans" Nelson
1993 - Tim "Shorty" Nelson
1994 - Scotty Lance
1995 - Brian "Boz" Coons
1996 - Dan Kennedy
1997 - Jim Hoffman
1998 - Jim "Mr. Jim" Connery
1999 - Kelly Bergen
2000 - John "Mers" Mercier
2001 - Don "Cush" Cushine
Hall of Fame
Congrats to last year's inductees, the class of 2001 which included:
Danny Kennedy (finally)
Jim Hoffman (I think)
These individuals joined their about 40 of their Doggie brothers when they
were given this prestigious award. It is a list of individuals who have
given their blood, sweat and tears to the Doggies' over many years. A
complete listing of these individuals will be available in an upcoming group
e-mail once the class of '02 and the Barclay award winners have been
inducted at this year's Saranac.
Editor's Note: If I have missed you from last year, please let me know so
that I can correct the error. Congrats to all!
Saranac 2002
Once again this year, we have three sides entered (A, B & Over 40). We
will
need plenty of players to fill out these sides, get off your ass and make it
to Saranac you'll be glad that you did. This year's events, will not
differ greatly from the past.
On Friday, we will have our annual golf outing, practice and welcoming
party. Golf is on your own. Some play at Saranac, which is a 9 hole
course. Randy, Merc and Greg Perry will be there at noon along with a host
of others. The more serious golfing crowd tend to play at Lake Placid
which
is a full 18. Practice will be at the high school field at 4:30pm and is
mandatory for the over 40's. The annual welcoming party and awards
ceremony
will be at our usual location in the Hotel Saranac on the second floor.
This annual event will begin at the Hotel Saranac at 8:00PM and will run
till about midnight. Please get there on time as we plan to start the
awards at 9:00 this year due to the early 8:00am games for the Club and
over 40's sides on Saturday morning. As always, we will be announcing this
year's Hall of Fame inductees and the John Barclay Award winner along with
several other traditional awards. This year, we will once again charge $15
to cover the room rental and expenses. We have two kegs of Labatt's
on
tap. Your dues will also be due at that time and as always, Merc will be
there to collect. Our finances are in dire straits since we have had no
official fund raising efforts in recent years and we need to get a positive
balance. Don't be a cheap bastard, pay your share.
On Saturday, games will be played throughout the day. The Saranac Lake
Tournament committee has a web site again where you can check for info
including the team matchups as soon as they are announced.
is the site and please check it out. We ask whenever poss-ible, that you
root for one of our other sides especially if you are idle. It means a lot
to the players and this is the kind of "home field advantage" that we
have
had for over 15 years that intimidates other teams.
Saturday evening remains open because people tend to go there own way
(they've already had way too much of Shorty and Rosey). Northern Exposure in
Lake Placid is a good bet for a Doggie get together.
On Sunday, hopefully all three teams will still be in the hunt and we will
then go to the finals field and cheer each other on. After that, open the
champagne and on to Casa del Sol. Where you too can get in a fight
with
Shorty! Can't wait to see you all there!!!

Alumni Weekend
This year's annual event was held at the "Port" on May 4th the young
pups
put on a heck of a weekend for the old dogs' but, the masters showed the
pups who were boss. I tried to get more details, however, at press
time,
Rosey got amnesia. Hopefully, someone can give me the real scoop at
Saranac.
Doggies' Web Site
If you haven't seen it yet, you are missing something. Great job by TB
to
get this up and running. Stories, pictures and even a link to the college
side. Great job TB and thanks!!! Be sure to visit at

Doggie Stray Pups
If you know of any alumni Doggie who is not on the group e-mail list or any
other Dogs who have run away and left us no forwarding info. Please give
these deserving pups a home and have them contact me before they end up
neutered or worse. My e-mail address remains:

Dues
Just a reminder, dues are due!!!! Please pay your dues at Saranac or mail
John a check today.
There is no change in costs this year once again, in fact, we'd be pretty
happy with getting what we ask for instead of any increases. Listed below
are the fees:
Active (Over 40 Counts) $35
Social Member $25
College Student $10
(No, Tom Ryan, you no longer qualify for this discount)
Doggie Dow Jones
As we see the stock market continue to decline in value it is a good time to
evaluate the Doggie portfolio, or the Doggies porkfolio. We have some recent
stock of good interest since one of the founding Doggies will represent the
40+ team after his retirement from the US Marine Corps, we welcome Big Kevin
back to the roster. This is a half man and half beast and has a true hatred
of Canadian rugby players. He is the only Doggies that was banned from for a
month in both Canada and US Rugby. He has bowel movements that remind me of
Sanchez's breath. He renamed the Brockport Ruby team the Doggies after he
watched the Beverely Hillbilly's show while under the influence to some
great medicine. When Jed Clampet said " Oweeeee Doggies" Big Kevin
decided
to name the Brockport Team the Doggies. He is also the only one I've seen
that loves Jewish women. Why??? ask him at Saracac Lake. Some PORKBARREL
stock could belong to Harold, Sanchez and possibly Steve Siano. Your
maketing strategy for these players should be to sell immediately. Does
Harold fall in this category????? Fat is Fat. Rosey will always fall into
this group since he is perfectly round and proud of it.Overvalued stock
belong to the pre-Barclay error such as Too Tall Tom, Prince, Boell,
Mercier, Randy, Rusty and company. Sell, Sell, Sell. Time has come upon you
Dogs of the past and in my politically correct way.....Bye Bye.Some of my
favorite stock values fall into leaders and men such as Hoffman, Chris
Celella, Skip, Chazen (best wing forward of all time), Scotty, Nellie and
Kennedy go without saying. These men have improved the overall perfromance
of Doggies stock just by their core principals, values (rugby only) and
their willingness to win. They are the right investment to improve the
Doggies operating profits.Corporate misbehaviour is downgrading wall street,
however Doggies stock alway thrives upond misbehavior, that is the Doggies
way and Doggies will. Buy stock in beer consumption products since all the
Nelson family will be consuming great amounts of Coors light during the
Saranac weekend. Rumors have it that Shorty's siblings have been caught
consuming alchololic beverages , just rumors, The apple doesn't fall far
from the tree or Short limb.Arthur Anderson is auditing the Doggies books to
see if there are any funds not allocated appro-priately. Rumor has it that
the Rainbow Coalition is being funded by the Doggies and Rev. Jessie
Jackson's love child is being sponsored by us.Dougy's stock is downgraded
since his investment is not with Doggies stock, he is more consumed with the
stock of hated teams of all time such as the Albany Kickobockers and
Scamncectaty.Cush's stock is down since the railrod industry has been at a
loss since the railroad conductors are banned from smoking pot. They had
less train wrecks when the smoked pot. Some of my most undervalued stocks go
to great team players such as Mr Jim and Ralph who are valuable to the
Doggie organization. Sorry Sanchez, you do not fall into this
category. Thanks for helping me achieve my annual Doggie orgasim.
With love, Shorty
